What are my responsibilities once I make an insurance claim?

Every policy is unique, but almost all policies require that you comply with the insurance company’s requests. These are sometimes referred to as the post loss obligations, and they include things such as reporting your claim in a timely manner, allowing the insurance company to inspect your property, and they may also include document requests. Keep in mind that some of these requests may have time frames. For example, proof of loss is required to be returned within 60 days. You may also be asked to give a recorded statement or an examination under oath. If you’re asked to give such a statement it’s important to talk to an attorney, and depending on the claim you may want to consider having the attorney present at the examination under oath.
