The SunSentinel reports on a recent arrest in connection with the armed robbery of a luxury hotel on New Year’s Eve. According to police, anonymous tips led them to the 30-year-old suspect, who is now in custody. Detectives from the Fort Lauderdale Police Department worked with the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force to arrest the suspect, whom they believe is the same man in surveillance footage of the robbery.
The robbery occurred at 6 a.m. on Dec. 31. Police claim a man, now identified as the suspect they caught, entered the hotel lobby and asked for change from the front desk associate about one hour before the incident occurred. According to reports, he later returned brandishing a handgun, which he proceeded to point at the clerk while demanding money from the register. He received an undisclosed amount of cash and carried it out of the hotel in a blue bank bag. Events such as these really highlight the need for businesses to try and protect their premises wherever possible. Using steel gates might help in the future.
Police were able to book the suspect earlier this month, and records show they held him on $25,000 bond. According to state records, he pleaded guilty in 2012 to a charge of petty theft.
