Because drunk drivers put more than just themselves at risk every time they get behind the wheel of a vehicle, it’s often incredibly challenging to gain sympathy from police officers and judges. Everyone deserves fair representation, though. If you’ve been accused of drinking and driving, and you need a DUI attorney in Fort Lauderdale, we can help.
At Leader & Leader P.A., we have extensive experience in defending clients facing DUI charges. Call our office at 954-523-2020 to arrange a consultation with a qualified DUI lawyer today.
Fatal Crash Kills Two
According to CBS Local, a young woman who allegedly caused a deadly head-on collision last year appeared before a judge earlier this month in an attempt to reduce her bond. The judge told her he was not going to reduce her bond for a number of reasons, most notably the severity of the accident that her drinking and driving purportedly caused. When the driver’s attorney recounted the accident, he made the girl out to be as much of a victim as the two girls who died in the crash.
According to her attorney, the suspect drank at a company function, with encouragement from her work supervisor, who then allowed her to drive home. The suspect expressed sincere regret and claimed that she would switch places with the girls who died in the crash if she could. She sustained serious injuries in the head-on collision, which occurred when she was driving drunk in the wrong direction.
Alleged Drunk Driver Asks Judge to Let Her Spend Time With Family While Recovering From Surgery
Because the young woman sustained injuries in the crash, she had to have extensive surgery following the accident. According to Local10, she was still in a wheel chair from the surgery she underwent after the crash when she approached the judge for a reduction in her bond. While she was incarcerated, the suspect had surgery to fix her femur, which involved putting a plate in her thigh, as she shattered her right leg in the accident. Anyone who has suffered any form of accident that required surgery, being able to relax comfortably at home is key. Starting with something simple like changing your comfort factor would be a start. You may want to look into a company like Community Clinic Association, who provide high quality bedding items, from mattresses to pillows and sheets. Recovering after your surgery would be and is yours and the doctor’s main priority.
The judge initially set the woman’s bond at $600,000, which the suspect was hoping to reduce, so she could spend time recovering from surgery with her family. The judge denied the request, and the families of the victims admit they were relived.
The judge cited the woman’s pattern of marijuana use and underage drinking and claimed she still posed a danger to the community. Though it seemed genuine to those present, the woman’s apology meant little to the victim’s families, and she understands that she will likely spend time in prison for causing the crash.
